One of the awesome time saving features in Windows 7 is the inclusion of the built-in Disc Image or ISO Burner utility. However, I have not been able to get it burn to my stack of Sony CD-R disks that I have. It will give the following error message.
The disc image didn’t burn successfully because an error occurred. The requested operation is only valid with supported media. (Error code: 0xC0AA0402).
If, however, I use one of the Memorex DVD-R disks that I have, it completes successfully. Weird.
Does anyone know what’s going on here?
Update: According to this MSDN Page, that error number equals E_IMAPI_DF2DATA_INVALID_MEDIA_STATE. Of course that doesn’t tell us much.

Maybe try a CD-RW and see what happens. You are not trying to burn too big amount of data? Just stirring the soup.

I don’t usually buy CD-RW’s because they are too expensive. and its only a couple of MB I’m trying to burn. In fact it would probably fit on a floppy disk.
The CD-Rs probably have to be Plays For SureTM certified by Microsoft, thus costing twice as much, and not working with any other CD burning software.
@Hans Mast ha. Perhaps. However most times Memorex CD’s are a good bit cheaper than Sony CD’s. So your theory falls apart.
I’m stuck with this issue as well. I can’t burn to CD-Rs (currently Verbatim), but have no problem burning to DVD-R (TDK). I’m thinking this must be some issue with my optical drive (Optiarc DVD+_RW AD-5170S), since I’ve experienced this issue in Windows 7 and Windows Vista on my Dell Optiplex 755. The behavior changes slightly depending on the version of the SATA controller driver I’m using, and at one point I thought I had a bad spindle of CD-Rs, but this issue persists.
As a follow up, I swapped in a different optical drive (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT10N) on the same SATA port and I’m able to burn CD-Rs. So I’m assuming my Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-5170S drive is bad. Since it doesn’t burn CD-Rs but does burn DVD-Rs, I’d guess there’s some issue with the laser in the head assembly.
Darn, not so simple, as plugging my original drive back in, I can now burn to CD-R, when I couldn’t just before trying another drive. Could this be a SATA cable issue?
Interesting… When I was having the problem, I noticed the following in the system event log anytime I loaded a blank CD-R or DVD-R, but this event is no longer appearing.

Let me know if you get it figured out. I would love to know how to fix it.
I google’d this error and came to this forum hoping to find away to fix this problem. As i was doing it I downloaded and installed a missing driver to my dell, R188776. After which i restarted my computer and all of the sudden it worked. Wasn’t really paying attention to what the driver did but that might have fixed the problem or just the simple fact of rebooting did the trick.

Devin- R188776 appears to be for “Ricoh R5C847″. Do you have an SD card reader in your computer?

As a followup to this, I haven’t had any problems since my Jan 14, 2010 posts.
ok, i have wasted time on this failure to burn cd too. So abandoning the burning software in windows 7 was my solution. Download “CDburnerXP” it is free and it is error free too. No problem burning cd’s with different software.
