Long Zheng has discovered that Windows 7 includes 10 ringtones in the “%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Ringtones” folder. He also was kind enough to convert them to different file formats so that you can use them on your mobile phone. You can listen to the ringtones below, go to istartedsomething.com to download the individual files, or click here to download a .zip file of Long’s MP3 files.
In related news, Microsoft has released three official Bing ringtones celebrating the launch of its new search engine. You can also listen to those “bingtones” below or visit microsoft.com to download them.

So are you a bing search fan, kirby?
I like it. I think on a lot of searches it gives superior results. For example compare these two searches for “fathers day”. Bing is a clear winner.

MS has included a lot of small communications updates with Windows 7. One of the things I liked that is if you go under the sound control panel, there is a “Communications” tab where you can have windows automatically mute, reduce the volume (by 80 or 50 percent), or do nothing when Windows 7 detects a call being made with it. Fore example, a bluetooth connected phone picking up with your computer, or a call made with Skype. This is also likely the big reason they included these ringtones to begin with. I don’t think most phone loudspeakers could do justice to a lot of these. I occasionally use my system’s speakers and microphone when doing conference calls by just attatching my phone to my machine via Bluetooth. It is rather handy and keeps my hands free to work on things and take notes.
I get a kick out of the “bingtones.” Reminds me of spring peepers…
